LAOS - 13 DAYS
DAY 1 UBON RATCHATHANI – PAKSE (–/L/D) – You will be met upon arrival at Ubon Ratchathani Airport and taken for lunch before travelling to the Thailand / Laos border – transfer to the hotel in Pakse.
DAY 2 PAKSE–CHAMPASAK – KHONG ISLAND (B/L/D) – Transfer to the boat pier for your longtail river boat cruise down the Mekong River to the former royal capital of Champasak, and then drive to Wat Phu Temple – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After lunch continue towards Khong Island, stopping en route to visit Khone Phapheng waterfall, the largest cascade along the Mekong River. Check–in at the hotel in Khong Island.
DAY 3 KHONG ISLAND – COFFEE PLANTATION – TAD FANE – TAD YAUNG – PAKSE (B/L/D) – Visit to Bolaven Plateau which was formed by an ancient volcano and famous for its coffee and tea plantations. The plateau has a number of tribal villages, some still practising Stone Age culture with primitive agricultural tools and frequent spiritual ceremonies. Continue to Tad Fane waterfall which drops 120 metres into a gorge. Follow this with a visit to Tad Yuang waterfall with lookouts at the top, middle and bottom of the gorge. A final stop is made at Tad Pha Suam waterfall.
DAY 4 PAKSE – VIENTIANE (B/–/–) – Visit the colourful and vibrant local market, then transfer to the airport for your flight to Vientiane. Transfer and check in to your hotel.
DAY 5 FULL DAY VIENTIANE – TOURS (B/L/D) – Full day city tour visiting Wat Sisaket, the oldest original temple in Vientiane with remarkable frescoes and 6,840 Buddha images dating back to 16th & 19th centuries. Visit also Ho Phra Keo, once the royal temple of Lao monarchy. The main structure originally housed the famous Emerald Buddha that now resides in Bangkok's Wat Phra Keo. Later visit the surroundings of Vientiane, including the Buddha Park and Friendship Bridge.
DAY 6 VIENTIANE – VANG VIENG (B/L/D) – Drive to Vang Vieng through spectacular scenery of high mountains and plateaus. Visit Vanxay caves and a tea plantation on the way and enjoy a short ride on a small two–person boat on the Namsong River.
DAY 7 VANG VIENG – PHONSAVAN (B/L/D) – Visit the local market and continue on to Tham Chang a natural cave with stalactites and stalagmites once used as a refuge from invading Chinese tribes in the 19th century. Near Phonsavan is the mysterious Plain of Jars, a World Heritage site. These solid stone jars weigh between 600 kg to one ton, but the biggest one weighs six tons.
DAY 8 PHONSAVAN – MUANG KHOUNE (B/L/D) – On leaving the plain of jars, continue to Muang Khoune the former capital of Xieng Khouang Province to visit the ancient temples. Later visit some ethnic minority villages to learn more about the architecture, culture, language and traditions of these ethnic groups.
DAY 9 PHONSAVAN – LUANG PRABANG (B/L/D) – Drive to Luang Prabang with some photo stops along the way. This former royal capital, with gleaming temple roofs, fading colonial architecture and stunning mountain backdrop, retains a unique charm rarely found in all of Asia.
DAY 10 LUANG PRABANG – TOURS (B/L/D) – Visit to Wat Visoun, the oldest temple in Luang Prabang. Climb Wat Phousi Hill for stunning views over the city and later explore more of the beautiful temples.
DAY 11 LUANG PRABANG – PAK OU CAVES (B/L/D) – Visit Wat Xieng Thong temple and board a traditional boat for a trip upstream the Mekong River to visit the famous caves of Pak Ou, housing thousands of statues representing Lord Buddha. Return to Luang Prabang by boat.
DAY 12 LUANG PRABANG – KUANG SI WATERFALLS (B/L/D) – These waterfalls tumble over multi–tiered limestone formations into cool, clear pools are ideal for swimming and relaxing. Visit also the Butterfly Park to see a large variety of colourful butterflies and orchids.
DAY 13 LUANG PRABANG – DEPARTURE (B/L/D) – Transfer to Luang Prabang International Airport for the departure flight to your next destination.
